Ghanshyambhai H. Amin (Chairman)

Mr. Ghanshyam H. Amin has played a pivotal role in multiple fields like Legal, Co-operative, Education as well as Politics. Mr. Ghanshyam H. Amin has provided successful leadership in State, National as well as International level Co- operatives for the last 40 years and has worked tirelessly for the development of co-operative activity in India and has given Indian co-operative activity a global perspective. Due to his outstanding talent, enormous reputation, and versatile knowledge he is known as “The Eminent Co-operator of the Nation”.

He earned his B . Sc from Science College, Ahmedabad in the year 1968, followed by L.L.B. from renowned L. A. Shah Law College, Ahmedabad in 1971. After completing his studies, he started practicing as a lawyer in Gujarat High Court in 1972.

Additionally, in the year 1975, he was elected as the Joint Secretary of the Gujarat High Court Bar Association. In 1987, he was elected as a member of the Gujarat State Bar Council, where Mr. Amin played an important role in solving the pending issues of 30,000 lawyers for that he made numerous efforts with the Gujarat Government to pass the “Gujarat Advocate Welfare Act 1991”. In the year 1993, he became the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bar Council of Gujarat & In the year 1997 he became the Chairman of the Bar Council of Gujarat.

In 1990, at the young age of 43, he was elected as the Chairman of District Central Co-operative Bank, Ahmedabad. This bank was declared as the Sick Bank during the previous administration & Dividend could not be distributed. Then, Mr. Amin through his unwavering commitment and insane work ethic made a result-oriented plan to take the bank out of the sickness and make it capable enough to distribute dividends.

In 1993, he was elected as the director of “Gujarat State Co-operative Union”, an apex body of cooperative education and training in the state of Gujarat and he became the chairman unopposed. He served as The President of the National Co-operative Union of India, New Delhi (NCUI) for two terms during 1999 and 2007. He was the second Gujarati person who became the president of NCUI and made Gujarat proud.

In 2008, the Chairman of Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development (N.I.S.P.E.D, Israel) Dr. Yhudh Paz, and the President of National Co-operative Union of India (NCUI, India) Mr. Ghanshyam H. Amin signed the MOU for the betterment of farmers of our Nation and adopted the latest technology from Israel for obtaining better results in farming and increasing the production of crops as well as becoming economically self – reliant. This, MOU provided dynamic leadership in the cooperative sector. Mr. Amin also took charge as the chairman of “The National Council for Cooperative Training (NCCT)” and played an important role in developing the training institutes and infrastructure in ICMs of 10 different states of India.

In 1989, Mr. Amin was elected as a syndicate member at “Gujarat University“ which is the largest University in the Gujarat state whereas in 1998 he was elected as a Senate Member from the Law division at Gujarat University. Mr. Amin was appointed as a Senate member by the President of India in 1999 in the “Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) – New Delhi” which is the top University in the country. Currently, He is serving as the Chairman of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Education Society (trust) which runs the “Siddharth Law College” in Gandhinagar and Surat.

There were about 6000 credit societies in the Gujarat state, but they were unorganized and faced many difficulties. So, in order to solve this problem Mr. Amin made tremendous efforts and visited different districts of Gujarat State and gathered all the honorable societies of the state, and established “Gujarat State Co-operative Credit Societies Federation in 1997”.

He became the founder chairman of “Gujarat State Co-operative Credit Societies Federation” and has been currently serving as Chairman of the same since its establishment.

He has also been serving as Chairman since 1997 in his village’s (PACS)  “Aslali Seva Sahakari Mandali” where he is playing a significant role for farmer’s welfare and development.

In 1999, He also played an important role in the foreign/alien operations as the President of NCUI in which, he has made an important contribution to the formation of the Asian Farmers Group for the farmers of Asia. After contributing significantly to the formation of the Asian Farmers’ Group (AFG) for Cooperation. He signed an MOU between seven countries of Asia for protection as well as for the welfare of farmers against WTO’s (World Trade Organization) policy.

He was elected as a Director of “Gujarat State Co-operative Bank (GSC Bank)” in 2006. When he was serving as Director of Gujarat State Co-operative Bank, he became a Vice Chairman of “The National Federation of State Co-operative Banks” (NAFSCOB) in 2007.

In 2007, the Central Government appointed a High Power Committee of 5 people Mr. Amin was one of them where he played a prominent role in making constitutional amendments in 1997 for the purpose of uniformity in Cooperative laws, Independence, and Autonomy in the Co-operative sector of Nation.

In the year 2007 , Mr. Amin became the Chairman of Indian Societies for Studies in Co-operation – ISSC  PUNE and he is currently also serving as the Chairman of the same.

In the year 2008, In order to have a professional administration The President of India appointed Mr. Amin as an independent director in 2 Public Sector Undertakings (PSU)Navratna Companies of the Government of India, National Aluminum Company Limited (NALCO) and Oil India Ltd. (The Second Largest Oil Producing Company in the Country after ONGC). At the International level Mr. Amin was elected as a director of The International Co-operative Alliance Asia-Pacific (ICA-AP) – Geneva & later elected as Vice-Chairman in the same Co- operative organization, in 2008. Thus, After 21 years, An Indian at the International Level held the leadership of Asian countries and made Gujarat as well as India proud.

The Co-operative Bank of India (COBI) is the Apex Institution of the Credit Sector. In 2013, Mr. Amin was elected as the Chairman of the Co-operative Bank of India (COBI) and became the first Gujarati chairman and made Gujarat proud. In 2018, he was again elected as the chairman of the Co-operative Bank of India (COBI) for the second term.

Apart from this, he has published “The Gujarat Co-operative Society Act 2009” in the field of co-operatives. All LAND-LAWS of Gujarat were also compiled and published by him in the year 2010. Subsequently, from 1961-2000 the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat passed 225 laws which were complied in five volumes named as “Gujarat Local Act, Volume I-V”. Thus, he has done noble work in the field of law.

Recently, Mr. Ghanshyam H. Amin was elected as Chairman of the Board of Management of the “Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd. (Cosmos Bank)”, which is the second largest co-operative Bank in the country. Due to his eminent contribution & exemplary leadership, he is honored as a State, National, and International leader in the field of cooperation.
